Q: Tell us about your career path and where you are today.
A: Shortly after graduation, I moved to Washington, DC, and started working in sales at the CoStar Group. CoStar is a commercial real estate data provider, and I sold LoopNet, the premium service for brokers listing commercial properties. After a few months at CoStar, I accepted a job offer at Bloomberg Government. BGOV is an all-inclusive platform for professionals who work with, or are affected by, the government. We provide information and analytics for government affairs professionals and government contractors. Currently, I am an Account Manager working with corporate government affairs professionals within the healthcare and pharmaceutical space.
Q: How did your SU experience prepare you for your career?
A: Besides the classes and professors I had, my two experiences in DC played a tremendous role in preparing me for my career. During my sophomore year, I participated in the DC Immersion Week trip. During this trip, we visited multiple companies and organizations, and had the opportunity to meet a variety of SU alumni working in various sectors in DC. During my junior year, I spent a semester in DC through the Maxwell in Washington program. This semester consisted of an internship, weekly site-visits, and classes. Both opportunities that SU provided me with largely influenced my decision to start my career in Washington.
Q: Looking back, what SU experiences have been the most meaningful to you?
A: It is with no doubt the people I’ve met along the way that have created the most meaningful experiences for me at SU. Whether it was the professors I had the pleasure of taking classes and working with, the alumni I’ve met, or the lifelong friends I’ve made – that is ultimately what has been most valuable to me.
Q: Why do you feel that it is important to remain connected to the alumni network and the University?
A: The alumni network is a great way to attend events, meet fellow alumni, and to network. We have the benefit of having a strong alumni presence across the country, with alumni working in all industries. Our alumni network is therefore a great resource to have. Additionally, staying involved is a great way to give back to current students and graduates as well. Whether it is through donating to specific programs, attending networking events for students, passing on resumes, etc. Many people have given me their time and sound advice as a student, and I’m glad I’m able to pay it forward.
Q: What advice would you give students?
A: Syracuse is an institution that has amazing resources available to you, whether it’s specific programs, networking opportunities, career services, the alumni network, etc. – you have access to all of it, so be sure to use it to your advantage. Most importantly however, enjoy your time as a student – work hard, but don’t forget to have fun too!
